Short Film Competition - Deadline is September 25, 2009

Filmmakers are invited to submit films for consideration as part of the eighth annual Short Film Competition organized by the Barrie Film Festival. The deadline date is September 25, 2009.

Films should be no longer than ten (10) minutes in length (including credits) and all genres are eligible including narrative, documentary, animation and experimental film. Personal, corporate and promotional films are not eligible. This is a juried event and only entries submitted in standard DVD format will be considered. Winning submissions will be publicly screened as part of the Barrie Film Festival’s annual Short Film Program to be held on Saturday, October 17, 2009. Prizes will be awarded in several categories.

Guidelines

The Short Film Competition is open to all filmmakers and the deadline for submissions is September 25, 2009. Films made in all formats are eligible (8 mm, Super 8, 16 mm, VHS-C, Hi 8, Mini DV) but entries must be submitted in standard DVD format (authored and formatted for consumer DVD players or home theater systems). Please note that the winning entries will be converted to digital format for showcase screening.

Entries must have been completed after January 1, 2007 and must not exceed ten (10) minutes in length (including credits). Non-English films must have English subtitles. Films that have been previously submitted to the Short Film Competition are not eligible. Submissions received by the closing date of competition will be reviewed by a jury and will be judged according to content, originality and technical quality. The decisions of the jury are final and the results will be communicated to the entrants via supplied e-mail or phone number. Prizes will be awarded as part of the Barrie Film Festival’s Short Film Program on October 17th, 2009.

There is no entry fee for the Short Film Competition but all entries must be accompanied by a completed entry form and proper identification including name, title, running time, originating format, mailing address, phone number and e-mail address. A brief description is also required as is a still image (photograph, slide or digital format) that can be used for promotional purposes. Do not send film prints, master tapes or other originals. Submissions can only be returned if accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE).

Categories

  • Youth Category: open to youth ages 18 and under. Film must have been made before your 19th Birthday and have been completed after January 1, 2007.
  • Simcoe County Division: open to all filmmakers, however entrants must reside in Simcoe County or have been a resident in the last 5 years.
  • Henry's Best Cinematography: open to all filmmakers regardless of age or residence. Please include name of cinematographer if differs from principal filmmaker – see entry form.
  • Jury Prize: open to all filmmakers regardless of age or residence.
  • People's Choice: All films screened as part of the Barrie Film Festival Short Film Program are eligible for the “People's Choice Award” which is voted on immediately following the screening. The winner will be announced as part of the event and awarded at the Filmmaker's Party (October 17, 2009).

Please Note

Entering the competition gives the Barrie Film Festival the right to use the work for public presentation, promotion and education. For the purposes of promotion and education, all entries will be identified as follows: “Provided courtesy the filmmaker and the Barrie Film Festival”. The Barrie Film Festival reserves the right to disqualify any entry that violates the guidelines of the Short Film Competition as stated. Entries selected for presentation will be kept by the Barrie Film Festival and archived for controlled use as reference material. Entries not selected for presentation will be disposed of unless accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE). The Barrie Film Festival cannot be held responsible for damage or loss of materials that might occur in transit. All filmmakers submitting a short film or video for consideration must also guarantee that they own all rights associated with their entry including accompanying music.

Barrie, ON - On Saturday, October 17th, 2009 the success of this year's Short Film Program at the 12th Annual Barrie Film Festival could be measured on the faces of the winners in the competition.

The audience at Imperial Cinemas was once again treated to a diverse selection of short films. The evening continued with a filmmaker’s party where the following winners were announced:
