Apollo 13

Apollo 13 - Film Still

Date: Wednesday, June 17, 2009 (rain date Thursday, June 18th)
Location: Centennial Beach
Time: at dusk, approximately 9 PM
Director: Ron Howard
Starring: Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Ed Harris. Bill Paxton and Gary Sinise
1995, Drama/Action-Adventure, PG, 140 minutes
"Houston we have a problem"... this is the true story of the near-disastrous Apollo 13 mission. On April 11, 1970, gung-ho astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and last-minute, less experienced replacement Jack Swigert blast-off towards the moon. But while in space, an oxygen tank explodes, putting the trio in peril: they quickly lose oxygen, run out of power, and get exposed to dangerously high amounts of carbon dioxide. Unbeknownst to them, there are more problems to come, including emotional friction when Jack is (wrongly) blamed for the explosion. Intensifying the situation is the fact that these mishaps catch the scientists and technicians at Mission Control by surprise, and they're not sure how to remedy the situation. Everyone must work together to come up with the right answer — if the astronauts are to survive... (synopsis from rotten tomatoes website)

Jaws

Jaws - Film Poster

Date: RESCHEDULED TO SUNDAY JULY 19, 2009

Location: Heritage Park
Time: at dusk, approximately 9 PM
Director: Steven Spielberg
Starring: Roy Schieder, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw
1975, Thriller, AA for disturbing and violent images, not recommended for young or sensitive viewers, 124 minutes
From the best-selling novel by Peter Benchley, Steven Spielberg directed this thrill ride of terror. During the height of tourist season, the police chief of Amity Island, a fictional summer resort town, tries to protect beach goers from a giant great white shark, only to be overruled by the town council, which wants the beach to remain open to draw a profit. After several attacks, the police chief enlists the help of a marine bioligist and a professional shark hunter. The three unlikely partners team up to hunt down the rogue and destroy it. The film shoot was notoriously difficult for the then young Spielberg, however, after the film premiered it went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time--surpassing THE GODFATHER and becoming the first film to gross more than a hundred million dollars. Composer John Williams created the musical score which has since become a well-known theme of impending doom. Ron and Valerie Taylor were responsible for filming live sharks in Australia; their sequences were later mixed with footage of the mechanical shark. (synopsis from rotten tomatoes website)

Superman: The Movie

Superman: The Movie - Film Still

Date: Wednesday, August 19, 2009 (rain date Sunday, August 23rd)
Location: Heritage Park
Time: at dusk, approximately 9 PM
Director: Richard Donner
Cast: Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, Marlon Brando, Ned Beatty, Glenn Ford, Terence Stamp
Canada/UK/USA 1978, Science Fiction/Fantasy, rated F, 143 minutes
Directed by Richard Donner this 1978 epic has stood the test of time and defined the superhero movie. Well-known for its large-scale visual effects sequences, all of which were created before the digital age, this is for many the most famous of Superman movies primarily due to Christopher Reeve's portrayal of the man of steel. The Superman myth is well told, from his birth on the doomed planet Krypton to his childhood in a small Kansas town and beyond. After he comes of age, young Clark Kent, learns the truth of his alien birth on a voyage of discovery to the Arctic. It is there that he becomes aware of his superhuman abilities and his responsibility to preserve and protect "truth, justice and the American Way." Once he adjusts to life in the big city, Metropolis, he discovers that hiding his superpowers as mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent (Christopher Reeve) isn't easy as he flirts with hard-nosed reporter Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) and battles supervillain Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman). This film is a pure delight, full of all the wondrous things we never tire of such as adventure, romance, special effects, heroes and villains – all told with intelligent wit.
