Film Production Workshop

The Barrie Film Festival is pleased to feature Producer Steven McEown presenting a workshop on creating a documentary. This workshop is free, but limited to 40 participants; please pre-register at

Includes:
- Planning stage – finding and choosing good subject matter
- Research and Discovery phase – seeking and assembling resource materials, cast of characters
- Interview techniques – building trust before the camera rolls
- Storytelling – what makes a good story? (strong intro, use of natural sound, pacing, stand ups, voiceovers, etc.)
- Use of music to elevate production value
- Technical Applications – lighting, good audio, framing
- View a sample of documentary work – "After the Crash"
- Question and Answer session
The afternoon will wrap up with an informal meet and greet for all filmmakers, families, and friends. Be sure not to miss this excellent opportunity to network and exchange knowledge and ideas before the big show at the Imperial Cinemas downtown!
Steve McEown
Steve McEown attended Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in 1974 where he took Radio and Television Arts. McEown pursued a musical career after college having been a part of the musical duo Even Steven for the past 32 years. He has written and recorded a number of original compositions that received extensive radio airplay throughout Canada. Singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot recorded one of his
compostions entitled "I Used To Be A Country Singer" on his 1998 album "A Painter Passing Through". McEown began employment with the community channel in 1994 having volunteered previous to that, hosting a number of shows including "Songwriters Workshop" and "Trillium Today." After working as a videographer for Shaw TV McEown became the news producer for Rogers TV's "First Local". McEown is currently a documentary producer for Rogers TV having produced a number of projects including the Rogers TV Impression Award-winning series "In Focus: Beating the Bully" and "Orillia Opera House: Centre Stage." In September of this year Rogers TV received a national award from MADD Canada due in part to McEown's documentary "In Focus: After the Crash."
