Raise the Spirit
Produced by Steve McEown2010, 29 minutes, 50 seconds, Rogers TV
This year we are pleased to highlight the work of Rogers TV documentary producer, Steve McEown. His stirring film, Raise the Spirit provides the audience with a unique opportunity to visit events in African history that took place right here in our own backyard, Simcoe County. Beautifully filmed, this documentary tells the compelling story of the first African Methodist church built in 1849 by Black settlers in Oro Township. Through the heartfelt stories of the descendants of these early pioneers we discover the spirit, courage and pride that this church has come to symbolize for generations of African-Canadians.
According to McEown, "This film is as much about stepping back in time and paying tribute as it is a celebration of culture." Steve McEown, attended Ryerson Polytechnical Institute where he studied Radio and Television Arts. After college, he pursued a musical career and remains well known for his music, writing and playing. In latter years, he procured a position with Rogers as a news producer and then moved on to become their documentary producer.
McEown has produced several high quality documentaries for Rogers. Recently, he won the prestigious Dave Rogers Award handed out by the Radio and Television News Directors Association award for his documentary about drinking and driving, After the Crash. Even more impressive, this was the first time in the history of any community channel that this award has been given. He also won the Rogers Impact award as well as the local and national MADD award for this production.
A delicious brunch will be served upstairs in the Carnegie room of the MacLaren and the film will be screened afterwards in the same part of the gallery with McEown on hand and available for discussion throughout the event.
